Big, brash, good-looking Hondo Kenyon is one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ best pitchers, a southpaw screwballer with the necessary skills and fastball to keep the opposition from tearing his head off, and the team is counting on the ex-small town Pennsylvania boy for help in their pennant run. On the other hand, Kenyon rates as a screwball in more ways than one. He has a long track record as a scoring jock with the ladies and his antics on or off the field are flamboyant and daffy, executed with lunatic fervor, sometimes funny of bordering on the ludicrous, always certain of coverage by the media.
With a reputation like that, it’s no big surprise to a lot of people when Hondo turns up dead in the electrically charged water of a condominium swimming pool. Slip Masters, the team’s public relations man, calls on his private investigator friend Max Roper to look into the case and find out for sure whether it was a legit accident or perhaps a crafty and ingenious murder. The Los Angeles cops have crossed off Hondo’s death as a weird accident, but Slip isn’t so sure. Neither is Max Roper, especially when he gets in closer and starts kicking things around and his investigations turn up some odd circumstances and a string of other murders. As Detective Lieutenant Camino of Homicide says, “On a Roper case they die on the hour, like flies. Death follows Max like a plague.”
Roper has plenty of leads to follow disgruntled ballplayers, jealous boyfriends, discarded lovers, the dead man’s new-breed agent, a psychiatrist, a pool-maintenance person, a hippie plastic surgeon, condominium neighbors, some gangland types, a rock musician and a pineapple heiress ex-wife, among others. His travels take him from the baseball locker room to the seedy areas of Venice, a factory turned nightclub, exclusive watering holes, a chic tennis club, a new high-rise office complex—in short, a cross section of Los Angeles. Along the way to solving the case, Roper get shot at, arrested, beaten up, held at gunpoint and hit over the head, not necessarily in that order.

I love to read a lot of books, from short to complex, Action, factual, period pieces...the whole smorgasbord . There are times, though, when life itself contains too much content, that you yearn for the total uncomplicated pleasure of the "Screwball King Murder".I enjoyed just about everything about the book: the narrator's POV, his style, his clothes and the entire sense of the scene in which he operates. I LOVE the fact that he actually works with his police pal and viva versa. I am a fan of John Locke and Harry Bosch and, most recently rediscovered "A Kiss Before Dying" by Ira Levine (1950s). This book fit right into my pleasure zone (unlike the exasperatingly overrated "Grey" Trilogy.
A wonderful read, well constructed, full of terrific characters and quite an unanticipated ending. Highly recommend.

The Screwball King Murder edition by Kin Platt Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Each of Kin Platt's Max Roper detective novels (except for Pushbutton Butterfly which is about hippies) centers around the death of a professional athlete in golf, tennis, horse racing, bodybuilding, etc.
Screwball King features the death of a screwball throwing Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, Hondo Kenyon, who is also a Hugh Hefner level ladies man about town. And that leaves just about a gazillion suspects for his mysterious death.
Typical of this excellent mystery series are the vague clues, the sordid nightclubs, the lurking hoods, and the vivacious and eye catching women who cross Roper's path.
His investigative techniques are sort of nothing more than poking around till you stumble in something, but it makes for a terrific series of novels. Like the others in this series, a top notch choice for entertainment.
A GOOD OLD FASION MISTERY!! GOES BACK IN TIME WHEN A BASEBALL PLAYER WAS PAID WHAT HE WAS WORTH. MORE SUSPECTS THAN YOU CAN THINK ABOUT. A VERY GOOD BOOK
I read this in a day. At first it was hard dealing with the baseball jargon, but the story had a lot of twists and turns. It's a mix of murder, intrigue and comedy as some of the characters, especially the 70 year old, are quite colorful. I really enjoyed it for my summer escape.
Strong characters and a plot that kept me guessing. I liked this novel more and more as I got farther into it. Snappy patter is a big part of the novel and I usually found it a bit boring. But the characters were more than stock and the plot was a mystery until the end. the PI reminded me of Parker's Spenser. Recommended.
Easy to read, entertaining, riveting and hard to put down. Just my kind of book, concise and made up of many really short chapters. The book is well written with a good storyline that leaves the reader guessing. An investigation that seems to lead nowhere suddenly reveals a hint but not enough to fully grasp the facts and identity of the prime suspect. I will definitely look for more books written by the author - Kin Platt - and would highly recommend the book.
