Nineteen favorite castles of Germany with stories of history, design and significance from the perspective of a medieval enthusiast traveler exploring Europe from medieval knights to the romance of the Rhine. Individual tales of stone fortresses and noble hunting lodges, recounting the complex history of German Princes and Electors, Teutonic Knights, the Holy Roman Empire of Barbarossa of the 12th Century, the royal kings of the family dynasties of Hohenzollerns and the Wittelsbachs, the ravages of the European Wars of Religion and haunting romances bound in the stones and spires, the stuff of fairy tales and holiday images.

The nineteen castles in this little volume have a lot of history behind them. Some are privately owned, some are public, and some are ruins. Michael January gives a short history of each castle and interesting stories. In addition, he gives you 4-8 photos for each.See a 23-foot tall wine barrel, wallpaper chosen by Kaiser Wilhelm II, even mummies! How about Castle Reichenstein, which has been featured on the TV show "Ghost Hunters"? Or visit Sommersdorf Castle, where "the little village of Feuchtwangen (meaning "wet cheeks")... is legendarily where Charlemagne got lost and stopped to splash water on his face."
I got a kick out of Castle Thurant, which sits on top of a hill looking magnificent, but odd. See the photo – there's a tower standing at each end. Why? Because it was divided in half for two different city-owners. Literally, with a wall built down the middle. Then each side had to have it's own tower. See the attached photo; it is imposing, but odd-looking.
I enjoyed "Favorite Castles of Germany". I first came across Michael January's Favorite Castle books when I bought another in the series: Favorite Castles: Switzerland (Volume 3)
