barge-farming, homeschooling vagabonds who spend
their days traversing tributaries of the Mississippi River,
escaping truant officers, and dodging flying Asian Carp.

family’s river tug, follow her on some wacky adventures,
and learn with her as she prepares for her upcoming
spelling bee.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Homeschoolers, Hippies and Heirloom Tomatoes." It was a fabulous portrait of a family living daily life with the goal of glorifying God without being "preachy" or religious. They have many adventures in their life on the river and there were some hilarious episodes that had me gasping and laughing. When they went fishing with their dead Grandpa my eyes bugged out of my head, but you'll just have to read the story to know how that all worked out. The father in the story keeps things interesting for his children and spins some tales that one is not quite sure whether to believe him or not. There are definitely some elements of the story that will become a part of my own family's culture as we refer back to them in the course of our own life adventures.I love how Mr. Newton included questions for each chapter at the end of the book. This is perfect for read-aloud time with your children and prompting some wonderful discussions as a family. There are even recipes and puzzles at the end of the book drawn from parts of the story. Overall, this book is wonderful, good-natured fun with many little nuggets of wisdom to glean along the way.

Homeschoolers Hippies Heirloom Tomatoes edition by Philip Newton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have two especially fond memories of my childhood. The first is my dad's huge, organic garden where his specialty was delicious, juicy Big Boy tomatoes. How my mouth waters at the thought of one of those amazing fruits, thickly sliced and slipping on to a plate next to an ear of fresh, buttery Illinois sweet corn! Pure joy!
The second one is my weekly trek to our local library where, tattered card in hand, I could bring home a dozen or so books that would transport me to places I might never experience. I could bounce along in a wagon with Laura Ingalls, sleuth with Nancy Drew, or wipe a fevered brow alongside Cherry Ames!
So, imagine my delight when those two favorite memories converged together recently in an imaginative and light-hearted look at life for one homeschooling family whose home is a tomato farm on a barge on the Illinois River! With this unlikely backdrop, Homeschoolers, Hippies, and Heirloom Tomatoes allowed me to embrace my youth again and how I loved that!
Written by homeschooling dad, Phil Newton, this enjoyable story finds the Masat family exploring the Illinois River one farmer's market stop at a time. Amidst seafaring adventures, farming struggles, and their hands on ministry along the way, the story, as told from the first person perspective of precocious and spunky twelve-and-a-half year old Grace, offers the reader an up close view of what creative relationship homeschooling should look like and I promise you will like it!
Homeschoolers, Hippies, and Heirloom Tomatoes is anything but predictable and I found myself repeatedly surprised as Grace shares tales of flying carp, entertaining siblings, a mom who knows how to deal with crusty customers, and, most importantly, a dad who makes the Gospel come alive for his children. Best of all, the relationships are every bit as organic as the tomatoes!
Besides bringing us a wonderful story, Newton supplies the reader with thought questions, spelling and vocabulary words, and even recipes at the end of the book! This would make a terrific family read aloud and even a super beginning for a unit study; I am sending copies to all the grandchildren this week! My only criticism is that book two is not yet available!
not what I expected. religious.
Just finished reading H,H & HT in 2 sittings. Love it!!! What a sweet set of stories. I was caught up with Grace the whole way through. Brilliant. It's great on so many levels.
Homeschoolers, Hippies, & Heirloom Tomatoes was an amazing book! I wish I could go live on a barge and farm tomatoes! And picking weeds out of a garden sounds a lot more fun now! All the adventures that Grace, a girl my own age, goes on makes my run of the mill life sound boring! Imagine that part of your everyday life was planning a circus! A circus! This book is far more than just good, it mixes Jesus's amazing miracles and a strange twist to an ordinary twelve year old's life, with the outcome a fun, moving, spiritual book that just knocks my socks off!
A story about a close-knit family living an extraordinary life. Their Christian words and deeds are so much a part of daily life, naturally intertwined in everything. I wondered about the title, but, yes, flying carp, tomatoes, and hippies are an hilarious part of the action. There is something for everyone, mystery bait, truant sleuth, marketing produce, fertilizer, and real recipes. So sad to come to the end, but one can always start at the beginning again. Thank you Phil Newton for this journey. I can see this book as a Disney/Spielberg movie!
Family, barges, tomatoes, hippies, Jesus, tie dye, ballet, ducks, Illinois River, homeschooling, flying Asian Carp, and even TWITTER! This book is the most original book I have ever read, and such a breath of fresh air! It is cross generational and educational without you even realizing it. The vocabulary and questions at the end make for great family discussions or just individually thought provoking. I was very excited to read a book with a COMPLETELY different story line than I have ever read before. Thank you Phil Newton!!
